"Luminous Quanta of Divine Intelligence…" dispelling the nuclear delusion

with one comment

We are privileged to live in interesting times! But we are rapidly moving from interesting to critical. We face global existential threats from all directions — climate change, resource depletion, oil peak, nuclear war, while at the same time we are venturing into vast new realms of consciousness that open doorways to the solutions we desperately need. Alas, the powers that be, as usual, continue to play a dice game with the future of our planet, and the outcome is still up for grabs.

This blog is about nuclear weapons and the urgent need to get control of them before they make an end to our story. I live in New Mexico, a state that has been designated a “national sacrifice zone,” according to the antinuclear activist Helen Caldicott. We mine uranium here, we host two nuclear labs, we also house the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant, the first permanent disposal site for radioactive waste. More than 2000 atomic bombs rest under the runways of the Albuquerque Sunport.

I grew up with the bomb, and I’ve been studying up on its history. What I’ve learned has only strengthened my conviction that the atomic bomb is the root cause of many of our ethical, political, environmental and health issues. Conquering its mighty thrall over our minds and foreign policy will liberate us to solve many of the other pressing problems we face.

I’ve been a journalist for the past 25 years. I worked as a reporter, and then editor, of several papers in Sonoma County, California; I also published free lance articles in magazines like Yoga Journal. In 1999 I started an online magazine, Awakened Woman, which I published for 8 years. During that time, I became aware of depleted uranium and its use in Afghanistan and Iraq — a horror story. I wrote an article about uranium weapons that received the Project Censored award in 2004.

How do we make positive change in our lives and for the planet? That is the question that interests me most today.  All healing requires change. Once we figure out how to change ourselves, we’ll be able to change our country.

Thanks for reading, and please leave your calling card in the comment box. We’re all in this together, and it will take all of us to find our way out of our Nuclear Dilemma.
